How an Online ADHD Assessment Works in Australia

If you are wondering whether you or someone close to you may have ADHD, an assessment is the first step. This guide explains, in plain language, how an online ADHD assessment with MindRoots works, so you know what to expect before you book.

What is an ADHD assessment?

An ADHD assessment involves gathering and evaluating relevant clinical information about your symptoms, history and day-to-day functioning. A diagnosis cannot be guaranteed: the clinician decides after considering everything together.

MindRoots provides ADHD-related assessment, treatment and ongoing management within the clinician’s scope of practice, through secure telehealth appointments anywhere in Australia.

Before your appointment

Once you book, you may be asked to provide identification and complete online questionnaires or forms before your consultation. This helps your clinician understand your concerns before you meet.

  • Choose a quiet, private space with a reliable internet connection.
  • Have your current medication list and any relevant health information to hand.
  • Use the secure link you receive to enter the virtual waiting room at your appointment time; your clinician will admit you when they are ready.

What happens during the appointment

Your first appointment is an opportunity to talk about your concerns, current symptoms, health history, medications and what you would like support with. Together, you and your clinician can consider suitable assessment and treatment options and develop an individualised care plan.

Additional information you may be asked for

Depending on your circumstances, additional information, collateral history or specialist involvement may be required. This could include information from someone who knows you well, previous health records, or further investigations. Your clinician will explain what is needed and why.

Treatment and medication

Where clinically appropriate and within the clinician’s authorised scope of practice, medication may form part of your treatment plan. ADHD medication may be considered in line with current Australian prescribing requirements, following an appropriate clinical assessment. It is not guaranteed simply by booking an appointment, and you will not automatically receive medication at your first appointment.

Medication is only one part of care. Your clinician can also discuss education, practical strategies and ongoing monitoring, and, with your consent, coordinate with your GP or other healthcare professionals.

Ongoing care

ADHD care does not end with an assessment. MindRoots provides ongoing management, including reviewing how treatment is working and adjusting your plan over time.
